"TANKS" Made it to 40 Mile Beach

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

"TANKS" Made it to 40 Mile Beach

Post by Keith Morris »

"tanks" here---
I am now at the 40 Mile Beach Camp Site, and parked adjacent to Wendy & Ash, and Bob & Bev. I am waiting for the Caretaker to allocate me to a site where I will be "resident" for several weeks/months in this beautiful location on the edge of the Indian Ocean.

The trip from Wyalkatchem was uneventful -except for a Get Going night with the kids at Perth and a night with a few Bourbons to get the happy-on-the-road feeling. It was time to hit the road again as I wanted to get to the 40 Mile Camp and soak up the warm sunshine and get the old bones working again.
The first leg was to get to Geraldton and overnight at JAMIE & Gloria's place. I was made very welcome and after a hot shower and a few bowls of Pumpkin Soup I had a very restful night in the box-on-wheels. I will admit that Gloria makes a very nice Soup, but I forgot to get her recipe. I am invited to stay for a longer period on my return to Perth, so I may obtain her Soup recipe then.
Jamie arranged overnight parking at his nephew's plantation in CARNARVON, and that was my next stop-over for the night. I was well received and the boys invited me to call in on my return to Perth in a few months time.

The drive from Carnarvon to the 40 Mile Camping area was an eventful trip and made the day a long drive. I had put 60 litres of diesel into the Sprinter from my Jerry can reserve at around 150 km North of Carnarvon just to top up the Sprinter tank. Little did I know that the diesel was a bad batch and suddenly the EDC red light is on and the Sprinter has gone into "limp-Home mode" and the speed dropped from 85kph to around 10 kph. This was a concern to me aS THERE WAS A 110 TON rOAD tRAIN ON MY GINGER.
The road train driver was not impressed with the sudden reduction ion my speed, however after I had a chat with him on Channel 40 and explained theb situation he offered to tow me to Karratha. I didn't like the idea of sitting behind a road train on a bit of chain for around 400 km so I pulled over off the road and became a Diesel Mechanic. I had tom learn another skill to go with my Mig Welding, painting, grinding & cutting, and tarp skills recently learnt.

The first thing was to get the Sprinter engine running again in full power mode---I opened the bonnet and wriggled every wire connection I could see, hit a few things with an adjustable wrench, and closed the bonnet. Great---the engine started and away with the speed of a thousand startled gazells I went---for about 400 metres then back into Limp-Home mode again. I found that by parking on the side of the road with the motor off for about 10 - 15 minutes the fuel problem fixed itself but only for a limited distance once I was mobile again.

Drain thbe diesel filter was a suggestion from another truckie via Channel 40. OK Here goes the task. First thing is to find the diesel fuel filter in the engine bay. It is next to the engine oil filter. Work out how th get the filter out of the fitting and then fill it with clean diesel, bolt it all together, bleed the system and take off, on-the-road again. This time I managed a 90 km run before theb filter thing gave trouble. I poured a few bottles of Fuel Conditioner into the Sprinter tank and I was now able to get along at 70 to 80 kph. After several attempts at using my new found skill as a Diesel Mechanic I arrived at the Camp Site just after dark (around 6.30pm) and was guided in by Ash with the torch light.
I will say that I am pleased to have arrived.
Keith

I'm now 87 years old, having experienced another birthday, and I'm still living in WA, single (gave up looking), white hair, no teeth, no money, no worries.
I plan to have another birthday next year.
