What LED's should I use?

Post by T1 Terry »

with the move to led lights this question often comes up so here is a chance to post your choice of lights, where you got them and what the results were. there is always going to be the battle over colour, here is something I posted on the CF in a moment of weakness

At Kerang last Easter, we had 2 strips of white light led's and two strips of warm white led's, each opposite sides of the Coleman gazebo, fortunately the warm white ones were on the kombi side :D . The white light were great for cooking, the warm white for general lighting. When we wandered back to the kombi around midnight, the whole roof and walls and towels hung across the centre on the white light side were covered with mozzies and I mean thick with them, the warm white side didn't have any. Spent near an hr and wore my arms out swatting mozzies with the zapper fly swats, very satifying but without the swatter life would have been a tad unpleasant when we turned the lights off.
So my avice would be to have both types of led's, but turn the bright white ones off as soon as you are finished, unless you string them up a long way from the sleeping area

Warm white for us too. Probably wont bother changing current interior lights with planned battery change, dont see the point!

Interesting observation about light colour.

My favourite shop for the more expensive LEDs for the van is http://www.ledshoponline.com/ledlowvoltagebulbs.htm.
I replace all the 10 W G4 halogens with http://www.ledshoponline.com/G4_LED_bulb.htm. Very satisfactory, but if I were to do it again I would use the most powerful of the three choices there - only the lowest was available when I did the change. And the price has dropped a LOT (ie half price now for that one).

DealExtreme for strip lights has been good for me.

Personally, I bought a couple of LED bulbs to replace the 12V bright globes from Springers, good but ridiculously priced and then bought a box of warm whites via Ebay from China. The box of 20, from memory cost less then 1 light from Springers. The brights went above the kitchen bench and the pantry door and the rest of the lights replaced by the warms. I also bought 5 metres of strip LED lights from China, again less then anything available here. less then $20 versus $70 or 80 for a metre here, to replace the 240V fluros and outside light. A bit fiddly if you are an indifferent solderer but better in my pocket then in someone elses.

Interesting thread, I've been trying to work out exactly which LED's to replace the 12 volt fluoro's with in the Kea, so much on offer with very little info, so, at the moment it's all in the too hard basket.

Cheers,

Whiska's. :D

Hi Wiskas or is it Wiska's, a first name would be easier ;)
DX extreme is a popular spot, here's a link that will get you to a myriad of LED's for 12v at very good prices http://dx.com/s/12v+led+light as mentioned before, I'd recommend cool white for areas you need to see like bench tops etc but warm white every where else to keep the mozzies out.
These are a stand out for replacing those low profile down lights http://dx.com/p/2w-9-smd-led-126-lumen- ... -12v-51001 Solder a bit of the long legs back on themselves to make the pins thicker for plugging in the socket may help along with a bit of Blu Tack to mount it just where you want in the light holder. Another option is remove the pins and solder wires they can also be soldered on to tabs on top of the heat sink backing plate. They can also be mounted with blu tack or double side tap in the body section where the fluro tubes were, then replace the diffuser cover, try a few and see just how many you need to look right and give the light needed. Don't for a minute think you need twice as many because they are only LED lights, they are bright.
These are great if you have the room for normal halogen 12v down lights http://dx.com/p/high-powered-3w-12v-led ... t-60o-3264 they are available in warm white as well. Two of these in our 2.5mtr square white walled bathroom make it like a near death experience so I'll be trying one of these dimmers out http://dx.com/p/dimming-controller-for- ... -12v-73618 hopefully I can bury it in a wall cavity with a standard light switch cover over it.
these strips and others like them are good for lights under a bench or in a cupboard or the replace the long fluro tubes http://dx.com/p/3528-5w-75-led-380-lume ... 50cm-33059 they can be cut into shorter lengths, a bit of soldering, add some wire and the cut bit can be used some where else. they are marked where to cut them, 3 led's at a time, any shorter and they don't work.

Just some ideas, they are cheap enough to experiment with to see what works for you.
A tip, order each lot separately, if you do it in one bundle and any are on back order you won't get anything till the order is filled, postage is free so....

I just removed the light and gutted it, then put the strips of LEDs lights that you get on E==bay in side the shell, so easy, the soldering was the touchy bit , and cost very little.. just get the + - bit right, some of the down lights it dont matter just plug in and away they go. I even did the out side van lights the same way as well as the tail n stop lights ect. Didnt notice any soft or bright ones Terry, maybe Im getting old.

Re the name, it's exactly as spelled in my profile! (Whiskas) please your self about the grocers apostrophe, not sure why you needed to query it, the use of nick names here seems to be common practice. :?

Cheers,
