Being one who enjoys a red with dinner, have been concerned about the "day after residual alcahol ".
Yesterday chatted to two highway patrol officers about this, and they were unsure, but talked to Dr Google.
The legislation states that 13.9 tonnes GVM is the point where it starts.
Now we can enjoy a wine (in moderation) without concerns.

Do you have a link to the sites you gained this insight? I was under the impression if you held a heavy vehicle licence then the rules were the same for any vehicle over 4.5 tonne. This sort of says the same thing

Terry, I thought the same until I checked a couple of months ago, only to find that the limit of .05 applied below 13.9T.

Re: NSW zero alchahol for heavy vehicles
If you read appendix 4 of this article https://austroads.com.au/__data/assets/ ... ug2017.pdf the rules are all over the shop, but that was also back in 2016. I appears that as of Oct 2018 many of the heavy vehicle laws will be unified and the 0.02 for vehicles with a GVM of 15 tonne or over applies nation wide and zero for any public passenger licence. There was talk of the GCM being the controlling figure and that would have really put the cat among the pigeons. A 12 tonne GVM bus with the legal ability to tow a 3.5 tonne trailer would have a 15.5 tonne GCM and the 0.02 limit would have applied.

I drive buses and coaches for a living we have random breath testing at sign on, instant dismissal if there is any reading.
I get tested roughly 3 times a week.

Re: NSW zero alchahol for heavy vehicles
I'll second what Bernie said, and as an aside to that, not many people realise but over 4.5t, at least in Qld and it is 100km speed limit. I think that is now the standard Aust wide, but not 100 % on that.
I just dawdle along at the speed I am happy with and not upsetting anyone and if I have a drink then it is time for the bride to steer from the drivers side for a while.
Cheers
