Fan adjustment

Post by Kappy »

I was checking oil etc this morning and noticed that the fan belt seemed a tad loose.

Below is a little movie I made to show what I mean.

Advice would be helpful, please.
Cheers

Kappy,

It does look a bit strange. Have you carrying any spare belts; and possibly a shorter one for the fan? (Or at a minimum, written down the part numbers/sizes?)

From Bruce's tip, is there an adjustment here? It looks like the idler pulley might move sideways a whisker??? or rotate around the bolt - like Bruce suggested.

I was just thinkin the same as Jon.....
Could one of those belts be the wrong size ?
The big one does seem to sit low in the pulley.

Perhaps the 2 belts are intended to adjust correctly from the main adjustment ?

It may even be an incorrect or stretched belt.

[edit] I didn't see the previous posts when I was posting.

I suspect thy belt width/type is wrong.

The belt is just OK , but I'd be replacing it soon
For adjustment the center pulley swings around on the offset mount
The adjustment is swing the centre pulley so the fan belt is tight , and using the long bolt pull the center pulley up tight.

The fan as it is doesn't move only the center pulley , which is a 2 movement arrangement

The fan belt is low in the groove mainly for wear and has been slipping for quite a while by the looks of it
Replace both with quality Dayco notched belt for long life from the belts.

The adjustment of the idler lift is at it's maximum due to the incorrect dimensions of main belt.

Looks like a 2 belt replacement then
That FAN belt would have been squealing like a politician banned from the $$$ trough

Whatever do NOT use Dunlop belts as they're very ''soft'' belt and stretch like mad, ( experience from Auto Air Cond Tech -Heavy Plant specialist )
Use Gates or similar !

The adjustment has been performed incorrectly. Loosen the bolt that allows the pulley to pivot side to side, then tighten the adjusting bolt at the top to pull the pulley assembly up. the pivot will move the pulley towards the longer belt as that belt is already tight, this will move the pulley away from the fan and tighten that belt. Once the 2 belts are tight enough to get around 10mm movement from all the way up to all the way down when lifted and depressed at the centre between the 2 pulleys, tighten the locking bolts that hold the pivot and the up/down slide.
At your earliest opportunity, find a quality belt supplier, probably a bearing place will be a good choice, get them to look at the belts to determine if they are the correct "V" section for the pulleys and buy 2 sets so you have a reliable spare set and the originals as a last resort replacement while you source a new set.
After going through 5 fan belts in one trip, making sure all the pulleys are the same "V"section is very important, once I sorted that problem the failing belts problem fixed itself
