Home security cameras.

Post by Kappy »

Hi All.
Sad news, I needed to return to WA as my house was broken into.

With all the years of prep and freeking Covid and now this, seems 2020 is toast.

So while dealing with the feeling of being violated, if I have any chance of moving on in 2021 I may have to consider a camera security system or completely sell off my meagre possessions. The later seems somewhat drastic.

Anyone have any experience with cost effective/reliable surveillance system that alert me when someone turns up and maybe an audio set to tell to F off.

Cheers.
Cheers

Sorry about your house invasion, the scum that is walking (slithering) among us these days is out of control. What about house sitters? park in your yard?

Kappy,

Bummer about the break-in...

You should find something in an appropriate price/feature range here:

Sorry to hear we need to bring back RULE 303.

Go and have a talk to your local Jaycar then a specialist in cameras. Suggest a goof digital for clearer pictures. Cheers Robert

Import an 8 camera (channel) recorder that will notify you remotely.
We have such on VP, can even shut down engine when cops chasing stolen coach tell us to.
About $300 USD, not too exy.
I actually have one that you could buy for 100, but config is not really easy, you will work it out in the long run.
Only reason no longer using is no Tour function. i.e. scroll through camera views.

A few years ago I was talking to a yank from Hollywood and lived in a gated residence. He took out his phone and showed me live photos of his security system. He could look inside or outside anytime he wanted, it also informed him of any problems when it happened.

If anyone uses a Wifi camera system and there a number of different units available packed with features, make sure you have battery back up on Wifi unit.First thing thieves will do is turn off your power at the switch board. No power ,no Wifi, there are a number of battery back up units available but don't use a UPS for computers as they have a short back up time and most Wifi units operate on 12volts via a 240v-12v power pack.

I have a Canadian friend who travels a lot for their work, their home security system is connected to their phone and any linux computer. When they were here last time, they logged into their home and we did a walk through of the house, workshop garage and property, it's absolutely humongous. The system alerts them to any suspicious happenings and he showed me a video of the day he was woken in the USA by his alarm system going off at home, when he checked in, there was a big bear laying on a couch on his veranda out of the snow. It had ripped open the fly wire door to get, in all he could do was laugh and said at least no one will try to get into my house whilst that form of security is around. His home is off grid with a big lifepo4 storage fed by 2 x 5kw wind generators in winter and solar in summer.

It was interesting watching the snow falling and a big black bear sheltering from the snow, all from thousands of klms away. He can also turn on and off his security lights and other things in his house, he works for a Canadian electronics company that supplies field communications and systems to their defence forces. He's the one who put us onto supplies of military standard lifepo4 cells way back, plus our first real BMS and balancing system, which ultimately became redundant when they developed active cell balancers and dedicated lifepo4 charge controllers.

I have an 8 channel external security camera system, which includes 2 remote wifi camera's. All bought on ebay and still going strong after about 8 years, the same system today would cost around $350 on ebay.
