A Fortunate Escape

Post by Swisslulu »

Well, today was the first day of my jury service. It started well. I woke up! Always a good start to the day.

However, it went downhill at a rapid rate from there. First I discovered I had run out of my blood pressure medication. How had I managed to miss the fact that I had thrown out my last empty box the day before? Okay, take the prescription and hope for time during the lunch break to have it filled.

Arrived at the bus stop to find 6 people waiting. Not a good sign - they should all have been on the previous bus as I was early. 10 minutes later had all 11 of us consulting the Translink website on our phones in a vain attempt to find out what was going on. The Westpac traffic chopper circling the vicinity did nothing to ease our anxiety. I pictured myself being dragged before the judge for missing my 8.45am SHARP arrival. Finally, 11 minutes late, a bus arrived. Phew, it looked like all would be well. A fairly uneventful trip apart from the 20 people boarding the bus at Zillmere because there was a fault on the train line and an expected 30 minute delay. At this stage I was congratulating myself on opting for the bus over the train. I had a seat, unlike the 30 or so unfortunates who were trying to remain vertical on this grounded roller coaster. Lucky me, I thought! Arrived at Roma Street bus station only about 5 minutes past schedule. Great, just a 5 minute walk to the courthouse. I was feeling a little smug until I detected a dampness around my rear end. What tha....? Sure enough a discrete probe of the area detected a very damp bum. What on earth was that about? How embarrassing to front up in court who a huge damp patch on the back of my rather smart grey duds. At least I got through the x-ray and scan machine without having to strip.

Finally worked out which lift would convey me to Juror heaven while trying to hide my damp bum. Scanned the barcode on my summons only to be presented with a question. Would I be available for a 3 week trial? Yes/No/undecided...... Naturally being a fine upstanding citizen only too happy to do my civic duty I tapped "no". The next 90 minutes passed with a bailiff telling us the dos and don'ts of life in a court room and the deputy Sheriff double checking who was actually present and who really wanted to serve on a predicted 3 week trial. She needed 37 suck.... uh volunteers out of the 80 vict... uh sterling citizens present. Fortunately it appeared that there were more yays than nays and we nays were summarily dispensed with, there being no other trials that day.

On arrival home, (I'm not even going to mention the mongrel bus driver who left me frantically waving for him to stop) I related to Erich the issue of my damp bum. A slight smile (or was it a smirk) crossed his innocent face - ah yes, he said, the airconditioning - it leaks in those busses!

Curiosity got the better of me so I started Googling today's trial. Looked like it was for attempted murder. :-0 Reading the online news tonight, I came across the following headline from the presiding judge in the case "http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/quee ... 6558388085. I was pleased that I had the presence of mind to tap "no".

I'm on call for the next two weeks but thanks to the wonders of modern technology, I can go online each evening to see whether Juror 91 Panel B is required to attend the next day. Fortunately, for tomorrow, the answer is no. There are only 2 Supreme Court trials scheduled for this week but there are a whole bunch next week. I suspect I may not be as lucky as today. But I can tell you one thing, I will be feeling that bus seat before I sit down!

When left waiting and waiting and no mewee in the handbag blame the airconditioning on an innocent bus   All in all a good day for you Lesley. I went for a jury duty gig once in NZ, I got excused because when i found out what the case was about and saw the 2 males all tidy in their suits and ever so clean cut, I immediately remembered back in time and I had decided on their guilt before it began so I informed the nice man and back to work i went ,, angry though.. :(
