Uhf radio.

Post by BernieQ2 »

On this reason trip to Therese Creek. the uhf developed a beeping noise...constant...then not...sometimes for the best part of 1 hour. BUT, it did get to not stopping the beep at all.
Accidently I turned off the GPS head thingy in the dash and the beep stopped, turn back on the GPS and the beeping starts straight up again
So I have found out the cause of the beeping...
How do I stop it and still have the uhf on :?: :?: :?:
They are both wired to the same fuse box...different fuse's.
Anyone :?: .

Separate wire runs, both negative and positive, back to the battery. The battery is just a big capacitor, so it should take out any ripple in the power supply.
The other thing is to mount the UHF aerial as far away as possible to where the GPS is mounted ... and get the aerial SWR checked on the aerial .... Not as critical on UHF as it was on a CB, but still worth checking

Our UHF did the same thing when we were down in Vic a few years back. After a fair bit of fluffing about I somehow managed to adjust the squelch and it fixed itself. I thought it was as a location thing as it started doing it out of the blue and was bloody annoying. Initially I just turned it off and used the little handheld for a day. Mr Google helped me after I found the right manual.

Thanks T1 n Dave.
Not as easy as you may think Terry the house batteries are at the rear of the motorhome  I would need at least 10 yards of cable, and I can't get wiring through the paneling.
I will investigate running the cable under the bus somehow. Wont be easy

Would it be possible for me to come of just one of the start batteries??

I will have another electrical problem to post about latter.

Bernie, if you think the noise has been caused by something you did to your wiring, then you could try putting a capacitor or an MOV ( mercuric oxide varistor) between the device and earth. Like we did years ago for AM radio interference suppression.

Bernie, the noise is new isn't it? Didn't do it on the way home from Kerang? Does it do it all the time. Even when engine not running? Our radio in the Winny makes a clicking kinda noise when driving next to powerlines on the roadside, but only when listening to AM stations.

No noise coming from Kerang Dave but I didn't have the GPS thingy on...I didn't know how to at the time.
Beeping started when we went to Morven a cupple of months ago. I figured out how to do the GPS on that trip.
And that's when it started.... but it didn't click at the time that the GPS was the culprit.
There is no squelch on the uhf.or off button.
