Avida electrical

Post by BruceS »

I have a relative with a problem & was wondering if anyone has some helpful advice I might pass on.
He wrote .....

2010 winny esperance, off grid a bit too long ,house battery's went flat ,turns out those battery's were buggered ,put new lithium battery in, 120Ah ,solar controller reads 14.2 volts ,however when i turn on at 12 volt controller, it only stays on for a minute then turns red and switches off ,so no 12 volt inside motor home .anyone have any ideas what might be causing it to say battery is flat ,when it's not !

I think he is a bit confused by calling it a controller. It is an AVIDA PC220KT-RV display.
Quick look at the manual I found online & it is obvious it isn't a 240v battery charger or a solar controller although it WILL disconnect the 12v power at a user preset minimum voltage.
Anyone shed some light on his problem?

Possibly the solar controller voltage isn't what the battery is looking for and possibly the battery is shutting off. Does he have a multimeter that he can check the battery voltage with?

Drop in lithium batteries are a nightmare to diagnose just what is going on, because all the control gear is inside the battery.

Thanks Terry. I haven't asked him any questions yet. Not sure if drop-in or brand etc.
He's going to get pictures today he says.
Sounds right what you are saying though. Not sure if he has a multimeter.

The lithium battery might be still charging and ay load pulls the voltage low and disconnects inside the battery.

If it is an Enerdrive drop in, they have a lock out bypass button on top of the battery .... maybe that needs to be reset and the 14.2v he can see is the solar going into the start battery, when he turns lights on, it draws more than the solar can supply and everything shuts down

Bruce, if none of the above suggestion is any help, get your relo to send you a pic of the controller displaying the fault and I'll ask on the Avida Owners Fbk page. I know some of them have a separate battery charger. It may be as simple as charger turned off.

Edit, just reread first post.

He says "The one below the solar controler is the main unit it turns on says the battery is only 10 volt slowly goes down until it goes red then shuts down".
Sounds more like a loose connection?

The only way to check is to probe the battery terminals with a multimeter.

I agree Jon. He sent me the wiring mud map & I suspect a connection at the isolator or the gauges etc.

1. Make sure the switch after the solar controller is turned on.

2. What voltage does the guage say at the 12 volt power board. (before the switch above is turned on and after)

3. Plug into AC and turn on the AC Battery charger. What do the gauges say then?

4. Buy a Victron BMV712 Smart Battery monitor and have it installed.

Bruce, ask him what the gauges display before and while the engine is running.
He's lucky to have a wiring diagram. That's the first Winnebago/Avida one that I have seen.
