I wouldn't bother trying to adjust the squelch anyway Bernie. By the sound of things it's your GPS head unit making the noise, not the UHF. Is that right?

Yes only when the GPS is on...
Any thoughts on using one of the start batteries?
They are up front under passenger feet.

If you were going to do that, then I would use both and get a 24-12 converter. Otherwise you will wear out one battery before the other. You would also need to remember that the start batteries would also have a permanent draw on them and would need to start the Road Runner at least once a month to top up batts.

No draw if I put a off switch on the line Dave.
UHF only on while driving anyway.
I wouldn't think UHF draw would be a lot.

Bernie, make sure the switch is in the 24v line as the converter will draw a small amount even if the radio is turned off.
Units are readily available and cheap on eBay.

Hi John, I wasn't and don't want to use a 24/12 converter I just asking about using just one of the start batteries.
Remember the days when most batteries had take offs on them....I used to take off at the 6v to use a Claxton horn.in my FC Holden.

First, if you have a 12v battery available, try just powering the UHF from it and see if that stops the noises, if it does, then reconnect the UHF and connect the GPS to the 12v battery, does that stop the noise problem? If the GPS running off a separate battery solves the problem, then wire the GPS to 12v of the 24v battery and that should get rid of the noise. The catch is, every so often, you will have to measure the voltage across each 12v battery and connect a 12v light bulb to the high one so they balance out again to both the same voltage. If you don't, the battery that goes high, should be the 2nd battery, will go to such a high voltage it wrecks it, the first battery will drop to such a low voltage it will be wrecked, yet the voltage across both batteries in series will still read 26v or 28.8v, what every the alternator charges up to, it can only see the combined voltage, not the voltage from each battery.
