Sent many early to teen yrs riding blow up air mattresses on the big waves at Wollongong's Nth Beach the bard riders had South Beach, and Fairymeadow Beach etc up along the coast, we didn't interfere in the board riding area and we far enough out not to interfere with the swimmers. The break of the Bomie petered out 20 mtrs off shore and reformed closer in to give the swimmers something to body surf in ..... cutting across the face of a wave on an air mattress with one hand holin you in the wave was the height of excitement, getting caught in a pipeline was like being in a front load washing machine when it closed out, required a paddle out and rest for a while, or float into shore if it was a bad one .... Once had the life savers come out to see if we were ok, because someone saw us take a bad one and thought we were drowning or something
Had a crack at a Boggie Board in mid 30's and again in my early 40's, the body didn't recover near as well even then from a good washing machine workout or being dumped of the top of a breaking wave .....

Was surprised at how my body handled surfing at this age, but have found it takes a bit more out of me than in the past so recovery means a bit of a nap after showering and washing my gear along with sore muscles which is diminishing as do more. Even though I've been reasonably slim all my life, have never been able to float, just sink whilst everyone else seems to be able to just float round and have no idea why that is, even the dogs float but I sink.

Not sure it's it's climate change, but our weather is certainly getting very different. We've gone from hot summers with bouts of cold and cold rain and snow winters with brilliant sunny days, to now our winters are warm and rainy. Temperatures during winter have yet to get below zero in the last 3 years and now our summers seem to have developed into tropical weather, with rainy nights and days and temps which have yet to reach 30, something which in the past was the norm. This year we're getting showers almost every day and temperatures have yet to pass 23, which is excellent and in line with warming.

That sounds very much like spring was in the Illawarra, rain from around 1 am till 7 am, the time I was out on the milk run as a kid, then mid 20's throughout the day. December/January were the humidity killer mths and February was the killer mth, hot, dry and bushfires. When we left there 8 yrs ago, the Feb heat extended through to April and early May, never saw snow on the mountain looking towards Roberston or Bowral and they even removed the icy road warning over the tops of Mt Ousley, Macquarie Pass and Bulli and the reports of trucks losing traction up Macquarie Pass and the top of Bulli were a thing of childhood memories.
I remember the roads freezing over where we lived for a while in West Moona and the water in the pit freezing solid in the bus yard at Montrose .... probably a thing the past these days as well.

In my callow youth I worked in Moree & Inverell.
One winter driving home for a rostered long weekend break I passed through Glen Innes only to find a roadside sign “Road Closed. Black Ice.” On the long steep hill on the exit from town.
Eight O’clock at night and Council had a Bulldozer using its steel tracks to break up the ice — and it was sliding about!
Eventually the road was cleared and the queue of traffic was allowed to go.
Don’t see that happening these days.
Although …
Rutherglen still regularly records —6 in winter and +50 in summer!

ps. In my Moree/Inverell days, my BMC 4-door Mini (panel van😁) did NOT come with a heater as standard equipment! 🥶
Regards & God bless,
Ray

Mine did, in summer the floor was too hot to put your feet on, in winter, too cold to touch with the fear the skin would stick, so they had heating and cooling .... just not operator controllable

I remember stories of sliding off the road on the old Bell Line of Road out of Lithgow to Richmond .... although that might still happen, some seriously cold patches up through the section of road.

The -6*C is serious cold for Aust, but how often do those temps get reached compared to the past, and how long does it hang around for?

I used to see -3⁰ on a regular basis on the old Calder Hwy between Kyneton and Mt Macedon. It was quite common to see some poor bugger had managed to slide of the road and create havoc. One of the best things the govt did back in the day was duplicate the Killer Calder.

OK I have to ask a question or 3.....
If people do a lot of scaremongering that costs the general population millions .. billions of dollars and then in due course it's found out to be false, is there any ability for society to claim those $$$$ back?
hehehe.... I wish!!

Hi Dave, yeah been a bit busy. Wanted to install a bottling line to make bottling our wine easier but the costs for a factory built one were too high, so decided to build my own. Taken a bit longer than expexted, learnt a lot, got a few issues with the last bit of software to control the ROPP capper, should be sorted in the next few days, then into bottling all of this years vintage. So, yes have poked my head in here occasionally but limited time available. plus have Bernie's problem, bloody mowing !. And some dinner parties 16 and 40 covers in the last couple of weeks. Should all calm down a bit now. Cheers Bill
