Big worldwide trip "bon voyage!)

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

Hmmm, well there was one moment I was concerned, but fortunately nothing transpired, but we were out and about on our own a fair amount, so there were opportunities. Generally I never felt in danger.
We purchased a data sim for the phone from Australian Globalgig who claimed communication arrangement with forty countries. It worked well in the handful of places it did work, but got nothing in most. Oddly sometimes it worked one day in the same location, but got nothing the next - go figure.

True and I feel the weight of it, as I promised to show and tell - what was I thinking? By travel days, we've only tackled 43% of the itinerary. But by number of photos, only 12%. Places with more interest generate more photos, hence more work. How do you represent a tourist site with six or even twelve photos out of say six hundred? Once picked, they have to be re-sized and submitted.

...the memories will last for a life time...

One thing Tassie Trev used to say was, "Don't want to be the richest person in the cemetery". And I for one don't want to be sitting in a rocking chair wishing and regretting like one of my rels who has plenty of the do re mi, but has dementia - no point as it will all be forgotten tomorrow. Besides, who knows what the kids will do with it - probably will not meet your standards knowing how hard it was to come by in the first place.

...I still want to see Aust first.

For a young fella Terry, I'm always amazed at the places you've been and things you've done. ;)

Cannot think of, hold on, yes - we almost missed the return punt in Venice. We were tuned loose after the tour and the guide arranged for the group to muster at a later time, between two pillars in a very busy square prior to the return trip. We arrived early and there was no one at the meeting place when we got there and no place to rest, so we took refuge at the waters edge about twenty five metres from the muster point. While chatting with a couple from our group, I asked the time - uh oh, "have we missed the group?" and looking up, there was no one in sight. Have you ever seen a camera laden old man holding a full half litre bottle (love those Europeans for that) of beer, run in the Italian tourist crowd? Believe me, it's not pretty and I don't handle those situations well. We did find them at the dock waiting, not for us, but for the shuttle punt, but more due to luck than good management.

Back to the grind.

Malaga Spain October 7

PS Looking back at Gibraltar October 6, I now remember one of the other vintage cars was indeed a V12 cylinder Jaguar and one of only two known to be in existence, with the other claimed to be in Australia!

I managed to prune this down to 27 photos and wished I could include them all. The difficulty with Malaga is that the attractions are like mazes perched on a hill and without a helicopter, impossible to show the overall concept. I've put in the models to show what the outline would look like. There is a path joining the Alcazba and fort seen at the top of the hill. The Alcazba is just at the fringe of the city square. Bear with the models otherwise the following photos will be confusing.

Malaga October 7

The neat tidy immaculate presentation of this town was truly surprising and without a visit to the non tourist areas to compare, I can only speculate that either this was nirvana, or the city fathers recognised the value of a good first impression. I would like to believe in nirvana, but after seeing places like Messina Italy, I'm sceptical. Please remember that I just loved A Caruna and Cadiz and have to put Malaga as equal to those two for spic and span.

First up impression is the impressive tree lined wide boulevarde seen at ground level and from the fort. The boulevarde even shows up in the model.
_DSF1107.JPG
Bus 35 from this boulevarde took us to the top of the hill where the fort was in just a few minutes, but without any photo opportunities to show the general view of what we were about to visit. The boulevarde as viewed from the fort above.

Perhaps the reason the roads don't seem to be choked like so many other European sites is the underground car storage that are accessed by car lifts shown here which are themselves housed in a garage like structure.

The fort was almost a garden of Eden of Alice in Wonderland with a variety of trees including olive and fruit plus nooks and crannies everywhere.

Malaga October 7

Returning by bus we walked around unbelievably clean streets where beautiful well maintained churches and ornate facades were delightful to see.

After ordering "dos cervesa y tapas por forvour", we were amused with street entertainment while lunching.

Malaga October 7

The sign (seen in the distance behind the street entertainers) for the Alcazaba caught my eye and we thought, “why would we want to go see theatre?”, not realising it was teatro – what ever that is.

Sure glad we ventured forth as this was even better than the fort in the garden department.

Malaga October 7

There was even a gravity irrigation system built into the pathways for all the trees and plants.

And everywhere there was Roman influence and what appeared to be Latin inscriptions.

So glad we found this little piece of paradise and would not hesitate to revisit.

PS I've reduced the quantity down from 27 - just too much for one site

Those 'irrigation' drains ............. are you sure they aren't open sewage system like in poorer Asian countries. (from many centuries ago)

I suppose it's possible, but this is a beautiful palace with extensive gardens and the channels are too shallow and narrow in my opinion to be effective and not clog up. Also, the fall in some places would not be sufficient to carry away anything of substance greater than leaf litter.
_DSF1319x.jpg
We did in fact find something along these lines in Ephesus Turkey in the form of public toilets. Notice how much larger (and deeper) the channels under the stools.
_DSF5492x.jpg
There is a narrow drip channel in front of the seats.
