Hi Dot
Re"Personally I don't think any info should be given out on forums which require an up to date and practicing tradesman to do in the first place.. IMHO"

WOW, THAT would rule out a lot of posters  ;)

Now to set the cat among the pigeons
I'm not sure about the system in other states but in NSW a person who can show they have worked with an electrical contractor for 3 yrs I think is the term, and passes a simple multiple choice question exam can get an electrician gold licence. This means the tea room person or office admin person with a list of answers to the multiple choice questions could become a licenced tradesman  with a 505 pass mark :o
I actually was given the offer to put my name down as an employee with a licenced sparkie for the princely sum of $100, I would be a gold licenced electrician with 14yrs in the trade now if my ethics were lower and I'd taken him up on the offer, I know at least 10 people who did over the years and a few who actually had their ticket at the time via this system and gave the deal a back up confirmation that it actually worked :o
Armed with the answers to genuine questions that can be double checked via the standards is the only way of testing the genuine knowledge of your chosen licenced tradesman, quite a few have fail my basic test so far, one question involved a position I wanted to fit a power point in the bathroom, not a single measurement was made by any of them and the answer was either a blanket, yeah no problems or no, can't have a power point in a bathroom

I believe Aust is the only country where doing your own electrical work is illegal, in many countries it must be inspected by a licenced tradesman before it can be connected but the actual wiring can be done by the owner builder. In Aust it must all be carried out by a licenced electrician, are there fewer electrocution deaths in Aust than any other country? Can the potential licenced tea boy sign off his own work?
Do caravan builders and motorhome builders all employ only licenced electricians to do the wiring?

Can't you just see all those caravans MH's campers all going around and around for days/weeks having the "qualified" tradesman doing the work at each step of construction?? year right, but an interesting thought Terry

T1,
I took our Winniwhatsit to an auto electrician when the headlight flasher failed.

He unhooked the cover around the steering column, then turned pale. Said the job would take all day to fix. :o (And he'd have to charge for it.)

When I asked why such a simple job would take so long, he explained that ALL the wiring in the steering column; wipers, headlights, indicators, etc, had been hooked up using only one colour-coded wire.

He'd have to test & label EVERY circuit before he could find & fix the flasher wiring.

I passed on that, & still have no headlight flasher... :(
Regards & God bless,
Ray

The whole balls up can be further exasperated in that we must deal with Australian standards yet there is no standard for Australian registration / licencing, each state maintains it's own autonomy and does not recognize interstate licences and does not have to answer directly to anyone other than it,s own licencing board.
Yet another reason to do away with state Governments.

Yep, that would be nice, but it goes a lot further than just rego/licensing. Have a look at what laws dont apply to certain Australians in regard to fishing and hunting.
